I'm currently preparing for my plane ride Monday morning. I love plane trips because you've got hours and hours to do things you normally don't find interesting or aren't worth spending your time on, such as... knitting, watching every episode of Jake and Amir ever, doing math homework, rereading Harry Potter for the one millionth time, watching a Jennifer Aniston movie, playing angry birds or staring at white/grey/blue colours out the window. I'm excited! Except I don't actually knit. It just seemed like if I did, plane rides would be a good time to work on it.

The Car Is A Lincoln Continental Mark III

If you have already been able to watch the 1977 flick The Car, you would know that the story revolves around a vehicle, hence the title. This movie is both a thriller and a horror film and it does tell you the story of a car with no driver and yet the vehicle has been known to do some really gory deeds. Yes, you’ll see scenes of the car moving across a dark stretch of road with its headlights glaring but there’s nobody at the wheel.

One of the things that I do distinctly remember about this movie is when the Lincoln Mark III, which is “The Car”, would blare out this horrifying sound. It simply means that it is just about to kill a person.

I’ve done further research on this movie and I learnt that it was marketed with two taglines. One states, “Is it a phantom, a demon, or the Devil himself?” while the other says, “What evil drives… The Car.”

And while doing my research, I did also come about learning that the Lincoln Continental Mark III was actually a 1971 model. It was designed and customized by the same person who also designed the 1966 Batmobile, George Barris. I guess there was also a six such cars created and all were destroyed during the creation of the movie. However, a seventh unit was created but it was later on given back to Barris. I don’t know where it is now, though.

Anyhow, to get a real good idea of what The Car is all about, here is an summary I found from Wikipedia:
“A small Utah community is terrorized by a phantom black muscle car that appears out of nowhere and begins running people down. The main character, Sheriff Wade Parent, is on a mission to stop the demonic car which seems to have no driver. The cops chase the car through the desert, but it takes out several squad cars and disappears after injuring Wade. Things take a personal turn when the car eliminates Wade's girlfriend Lauren in a shocking sequence. Gathering his remaining officers, Wade concocts a plan to stop the horsepower-laden monster. But discovering it hiding in his own garage, Wade is forced to lure the car into a mountainous canyon area, where a final confrontation settles the score and reveals the driver's frightening identity.

Fast and Furious 4 came out in 2009, and all fans of this film was delighted with the return of Dominic Toretto into the story. Hehehe .. I Love Dom. The story begins with a robbery committed by Dom and his friends while in the Dominican Republic, they robbed (wihhhh. .. on so robber! Hehehe ..) of a car containing gasoline. Dom was able to escape (after the prison on the Fast and Furious 1) and is now an international fugitive. It makes Dom decided to move to Japan (this must have been the common thread between the Fast and Furious and Tokyo Drift) and friendly with the Han. But Dom's sister Mia Toretto suddenly proclaim that Letty Leaves (Mechelle Rodriques) lover Dom, menggal murdered. Dom had decided to return to America, and intends to take revenge (wkwkwkw, resentment ..). It was then that the figure of Brian O'Conner's go back and remember that he is now Dom is the most wanted man in the search by the police. Brian also wanted to help Dom revenge, between foster friendship and trust again.

As with any new BMW, the latest V8-powered M5 F10 comes packed with an array of gadgets and gimmicky features, some of which you may like, some of which you may not.

One of the sports saloon's new features that may dismay purists is the Active Sound Design. To explain, this system is designed to –according to BMW- "accurately replicate" the sounds of the bi-turbocharged V8 engines inside the cabin through the vehicle's audio system.

BMW says that the electronically controlled system evenly spreads the sound across all five seats and that it takes into consideration a variety of factors including the performance mode settings. More details on the new feature in the press blurb after the jump.

M5 drivers will be given an even more direct reminder of their car’s performance capability by technology that brings the distinctive sound of the high-performance V8 – in all its glory – into the cabin of the new BMW M5. The Active Sound Design technology specially developed for the new BMW M5 takes its cues from the driving situation at any one time to deliver an accurate reproduction of the engine’s sound through the car’s audio system.
The system’s digital signal processing exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to reflect the engine’s revs and torque, and the car’s speed over the road. The result over a smoothly driven journey is a discreet soundtrack in keeping with the harmonious and assured characteristics of the V8 powerplant. A stamp on the accelerator, meanwhile, prompts an immediate audible response to match the instantaneous – and typically M – burst of power from beneath the bonnet.
In generating its signals, Active Sound Design takes its cues from the firing sequence of the eight-cylinder engine and the frequency range of the exhaust system. This gives the driver an extremely accurate impression of current engine load and an even more intense sensation of the V8’s high-performance characteristics.
At the same time the Active Sound Design control unit ensures an even spread of sound across all five seats of the new BMW M5, while observing the legal guidelines governing noise emissions inside and outside the car. The characteristics of the sound produced by the technology also adjust to the engine settings selected by the driver. First Drive: New Peugeot 508 GT 2.2-liter HDi Sedan

It’s been a long time since Peugeot had a serious contender in the hotly contested sub-premium segment. The 407 was unloved and lacking in style; a “307 with a boot” purchased exclusively by the brand faithful. It was a bit bland and outdated compared to its major European competitor: the Mk 4 Ford Mondeo.

With the 508, Peugeot hopes to change all that. A carbon copy of the Peugeot 5 Concept that premiered at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the 2011 Peugeot 508 puts the verve – that oh-so-important French flair – back into Peugeot’s line-up.

We take the wheel of Peugeot’s flagship, AU$52,990 508 GT with a 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel and a 6-speed automatic for a week-long road test and review.

Overview

Like the Peugeot 5 Concept, the 508 is guaranteed to polarise opinions. The styling definitely falls into the like it or loath it category with a Bangle-esque arse, 7th generation Honda Accord headlights, trapezoidal grille and reverse rake C-pillar. Somehow, though, it all works – especially in the flesh.

There’s a sense of style and occasion to the 508, and the GT spec’s 18 inch alloys really set the car off. The clustered daytime running lights, front fogs and the subtle use of chrome on the boot lid, grille and around the window line are also effective.

It compares favourably when placed alongside its competitors: the Ford Mondeo, Honda Accord Euro, Hyundai i45 / Sonata and Volkswagen Passat. The 508 sedan measures 4,792 mm (188.66 in.) in length with a 2,817 mm (110.90 in.) wheelbase – roughly 100 mm (3.93 in.) less than the current gen Holden Commodore sedan.

The front and rear overhangs are well proportioned at 985 mm (38.77 in.) and 990 mm (38.98 in.) respectively. It’s also 1,456 mm (57.32 in.) tall and 2,068 mm (81.42 in.) wide with the wing mirrors (1,853 mm / 72.95 in. without). It’s very individual and very French, which I think is just what the designers were going for.

Inside Scoop

Inside is where the 508 really shines. The seats are Nappa leather and the cabin abounds with piano black and carbon-lookalike trim pieces. What surprises most is just how functional everything is: from the intuitive quad-zone climate control to the meaty multi-function steering wheel.

The instrument cluster is neatly designed and easy to read, as is the switchable trip computer display. The colour HUD is less useful, being all but unreadable in direct sunlight ~~and with no option to turn it off~~ [Update: turns out it can be turned off, see note below].

On the upside, the satellite navigation and radio controls are some of the best on the market and a pleasure to use. The front pews are also comfortable and there’s more than enough leg room, even for a tall bloke like me.

On The Road

Our Egyptian Blue 508 GT was fitted with Peugeot’s 2.2-liter HDi four-cylinder common rail turbo diesel engine producing an output of 204HP / 150 kW at 3,500 rpm and a peak torque of 450 Nm / 331.9 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm.

The turbocharged diesel is a torquey little unit and well-paired to the 6-speed automatic transmission that powers the front-wheels, allowing for both comfortable freeway cruising and brisk overtaking manoeuvres.

Peugeot’s published figures suggest a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62mph) time of 8.2 seconds; I think most drivers (myself included) would manage 9 without pushing the engine too hard. We were unable to test the claimed 230 km/h (145 mph) top speed, though at 100 km/h (62 mph) the HDi was suitably quiet and refined.

It’s easy to forget just how large a car it really is, except when parking it – at which point the front and rear parking sensors become a real godsend.

I wasn’t impressed with the GT’s unique double wishbone and drop link hub carrier front suspension, which let me feel and hear every bump and pothole on the road. I understand that there’s an expectation for all car’s today to have some sporting character but in this category I’d rather have a little less sport and a little more comfort.

The weighted steering is also good in a variety of conditions, thanks mostly to the speed sensitive power steering. I’ve yet to find a large car that’s as much a pleasure to park as the 508. The steering wheel mounted cruise control and speed limiter functions are also very intuitive and make driving the 508 a real treat.

As for fuel economy, I think the manufacturer’s combined cycle rating of 5.7 lt/100 (41.2 mpg US, 49.6 mpg UK ) is a little optimistic; according to the trip computer I averaged around 8.0lt/ 100 (29.4 mpg US / 35.3 mpg) through a combination of city and highway driving.

I found the brakes to be more than adequate for a car of the 508’s size.

The Final Word

My first thought on stepping into the 508 was, “It feels German.” This is no bad thing, and Peugeot’s build quality and dedication to design have certainly improved over the outgoing 407. On the upside, however, the 508 is a car that I think is uniquely French.

It’s a satisfying drive and quite live-able for a car of its size. The 2.2 L HDi is an unusual choice for a range-topper but I think that just gives it all the more character.

Peugeot has succeeded in bridging the gap between French flair and Germanic toughness, which I think is no mean feat. I enjoyed my time in the 508 and look forward to seeing what the French automaker can do in the coming years.

The European Union has already agreed with cell phone manufacturers to adopt a common charger format for their new phones. Therefore, consumers we will be able to buy a new phone without a charger, which up until now, was different to the one used by their old cellphone.

Now ACEA, the European car manufacturers association, is following the example and wants carmakers to adopt a common standard concerning chargers for their plug-in electric vehicles. To that end, it has already compiled a set of recommendations that stipulates the use of a uniform type of plug regardless of the country or power provider.

“This is a major step towards the broader introduction of electrically-charged vehicles in Europe and paves the way for a harmonized solution around the world”, said ACEA Secretary General Ivan Hodac. “We call on the European commission to adopt these recommendations and to clear remaining issues as soon as possible.”

Up until now, each manufacturer has introduced its own type of charger. A common type of chargers and charging stations will create a uniform infrastructure throughout the continent and is believed to help increase sales of electric vehicle across Europe.

According to Hodac, adopting a common standard will benefit not just the consumer, but also the carmakers and the charging stations providers: “Standardization provides predictability to investors, economies of scale and reduces costs. We have also ensured that our solution meets the highest safety standard and is easy to use.”

ACEA urges the EU to examine and approve of the new standard “as soon as possible”. Car manufacturers, on the other hand, want it implemented from 2017.

Audi’s R18 TDI Racecar Debuts in the U.S., Aims for 10th Victory at “Petit Le Mans”

What a surprise…another Saturday, another Red Bull at the first spot of the starting grid, with a second Red Bull racer at its side: a site everyone has gotten used to this year.

What must have frightened poleman Sebastian Vettel rivals for tomorrow's race is his admission that he held back and did not perform at 100%: “On the last run, I tried a bit too much going into the really tricky chicane around Turn 10," said Vettel, adding that, "I decided to abort the lap, as it can be so easy to damage the car.”

The two Red Bulls were challenged not by Ferrari, as Fernando Alonso’s pace at the free practice promised, but by the McLarens of Jenson Button who beat his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, for third place.

The Scuderia had to be content with the third row of the grid with Alonso in front of Felipe Massa. The two Mercedes’ and the two Force Indias completed the top 10 of the first night race in this year’s Formula 1 calendar.

Following its tenth victory at the famous Le Mans 24 Hours in June, Audi is now aiming for its 10th triumph at the endurance race's U.S. counterpart, the “Petit Le Mans” at Road Atlanta in the state of Georgia, with the R18 TDI racecar.

From 2000 until 2005, the Audi R8 dominated the race, passing the torch to the R10 TDI which continued Audi’s rule in Road Atlanta until 2008. The R15 that replaced it wasn’t that fortunate over the next two years, so the team is returning to Road Atlanta with its brand-new weapon, the 3.7-liter V6 diesel R18 TDI. Team Joest will field two cars in the R18’s overseas debut.

Audi Motorsport boss Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich said: “I’m very much looking forward to Road Atlanta. I like this track and I think it’s one of the nicest circuits for sports prototypes, and a track on which Audi has had major success before. I’m hoping we’ll be showing a good performance with the R18 TDI in America and achieve victory.”

Qualifying for the “Petit Le Mans” will take place on September 30, and the race will start on Saturday, October 1, at 11:30 local time.
